A bit about me.
Hello, I’m Jay Powell, an award-winning designer based in Lewes, East Sussex. I currently work as a Senior Designer at Hux London, a bespoke Joinery manufacturer known for its precision, and quietly confident approach to design.
My background sits at the intersection of Technical Design and art, which strongly shapes how I think and work. I’m drawn to complex, layered briefs, the kind that require curiosity, patience, and a willingness to explore problems from multiple angles. I enjoy moving fluidly between creative thinking and technical resolution, developing ideas from early concepts through to detailed manufacturing information and installation on site.
My time in the industry has been formative. It’s here that I’ve not only refined my design and technical abilities, but also learned how to present ideas with clarity, manage ambitious projects, build lasting client relationships, and guide designs through the realities of budgets, timelines, and construction. These skills have been earned through experience, by being deeply involved, asking questions, making mistakes, and continually learning.
At my core, I’m a maker and a problem-solver. I’m inspired by nature, science, culture, and function, and by a constant curiosity about how things are put together and why they work. I believe good design should feel effortless, even when it’s underpinned by rigorous thinking and careful detail.
I have a genuine thirst for knowledge and an ongoing commitment to developing my craft. My process often begins with sketching and physical models, before moving into digital design using industry-standard tools such as AutoCAD, Sketch up ,Photoshop, SolidWorks, and KeyShot. For me, tools are simply a means to an end, helping ideas take shape and become something tangible and human.
Design, at its best, is thoughtful, practical, and emotionally resonant. That’s what I strive for in my work, and what continues to motivate me every day.
